It was on the phone to Alan that we had the idea to target some UK races this summer. I was visiting family anyway, after a year of living in New Zealand, so thought it would be a good chance to give the UK racing scene a crack. I last rode in the Project 51 colours back in 2014 as a junior and couldn’t wait to try on the polka dots again.
I dove straight into some mid week crits when I arrived in early June. Ripping the band aid off as they say. It was a daunting task to play ‘catch up’ on race fitness. I’d not raced since January, when the NZ season drew to a close, and I was jumping into mid race season in Europe. Jet lagged and lacking top-end, I took to the start line surrounded by riders with sharp tan lines and exuberance from their recent wins.
Goodwood Tuesday nights had me clinging on for dear life and I was shocked at the sheer explosivity of the last lap sprint at Mountbatten. The summer racing vibes were great though, and it was cool to catch up with so many people.
Luckily for my head, the hard evening crits were all part of the plan. We had created a training program to build a big base of endurance during my work commutes in New Zealand, and now was time to top that off with some high intensity from crit racing.
I headed into my first road race quietly confident that all the boxes were ticked. It was the London Dynamo summer road race and ended up being a huge day out in the break-away, ending with 3rd behind two hitters. The coolest part of the day was racing with teammates for the first time in a while. Adam, Isaac, Ian and I covered all the early moves and made sure one of us made it up the road.
Time for the big target, National champs. It was a long drive up to Castle Douglas but I was excited to return to where I first attended a Project 51 training camp back in 2012.
The course felt like a speedway but maybe I just wasn’t used to the speed of 150 of Britain's best cyclists. The weather was dismal and once the speed eased I bridged over to the breakaway in a small group. Things were looking good but as Mark Cavendish and co started whittling down the group, my overshoe pinged loose into my spokes and I lost focus for a while trying to rip it off. (Much to the amusement of the Eurosport commentary team!)
The end result was 27th. Not what I’d hope for. But it was proof that a good plan and preparation were good enough to compete at national level, even with just 4 race days in the legs - 3 of them crits.
From there I surfed the form until my flight home at the end of July. This is where I performed best and was certainly the races I most enjoyed. I hit out very early at Stockton GP for 7th, survived the hottest day of the year in the break again at the Lancaster GP for 13th and finished the Manx tour strong in the lead group of 10.
Thanks to the Project 51 family for having me back for a short stint. It’s such a supportive group to be a part of and really pushes everyone to get the best out of each other. Getting to throw together a training plan filled with all the best tips and tricks I’ve learned from Alan over the years was so much fun and proved to me, once again, that he is one of UK’s very best and unsung cycling coaches.

Junior rider Grace Davies rode her first race in Belgium. Always a daunting experience for a rider, for Grace it was especially tough, with her only starting racing last year, which makes 2022 her first proper season.
Grace held her own, getting stuck in, finishing safely in the front group.

Junior rider Grace Davies put in a great performance in the Women's 2/3 race. Against tough competition, Grace held her own and looked comfortable in the bunch. Unlucky end to the race for Grace though who got caught up in the last lap crash and ended nose diving into the hedge. Determined to get a result, Grace remounted and chased hard finishing a well earned 21st place
As part of his build up for the Iron Man, Paul Newsome recorded an impressive 1.21.08 in the Brighton Half Marathon. Superb performance.
Another win for Mikey Weavers in the Winter Series Races. This time at Preston Park in Brighton.
Good 6th place too for George Sales in his first outing.
Solo victory for Mikey Weavers in the SERRL Winter Series Circuit Race at Cyclopark, 15/01/2022. 4th for Isaac Wright.
Isaac Wright chalked up is first top 10 placing in Belgium today in the Koekelare 1.12B Kermis race.
Mikey rode his first Interclub race, a high level Belgian amateur race series, the Wingene Koers. Riding for Baguet Indulek-Doltcini-Derito Cycling Team, Mikey came in a brilliant 14th place in a long, hot, tough race, guided all the way by his Project 51 mentor and coach Olly Moors.

Still in her first season, 17 year old Grace Davies won the Southampton Sporterium town centre crit.
Mikey Weavers has just earnt himself riding for the Baguet Indulek-Doltcini-Derito Cycling Team, based in East Flanders. The opportunity gives Mikey exposure to competing in the next level of races, Interclubs.
In previous seasons the team have had Project 51 riders Dan gardner and Olly Moors in their ranks.
Isaac Wright latest stint in Belgium started with a solid weekends racing, gaining two solid finishes in the pointy end of the race at Oosterzele on Saturday and Steenhuize on Sunday.
This week he rides Koekelare on Thursday and Schellebelle on Saturday.
Megan Panton continued her progression yesterday, making the break in the Grote Prijs Tania De Jonge race in Nedehasselt, East Flanders. This was the latest goal Megan had set herself for her development.
Mikey Weavers put in a top ride in the Oordegem Kermis in East Flanders. Mikey made the key break, which included many of the Flanders big hitters. In the break with Mikey was his Project 51 mentor Olly Moors who was full of praise for Mikey's Strong and mature riding. Mikey ended up 15th place in the race.
In his second to last race before leaving to finish off his season in the Project 51 house in Belgium, Isaac Wright took a fine win in the Crawley Wheelers / Surrey League Road race at Sharpthorne, Sussex.
In this troubled year we're having, Megan Panton finally got to return to Belgium and join her UCI team Multum Accountants Ladies CT. She safely finished in the pack in a 110 strong starting line up in Haasdonk.
