Ever fancied racing in the bike racing homeland?
Project 51 will again be running weekend & day racing trips to Belgium. We can take a trip of individual riders or can organise club trips.
The Racing
What’s the racing like?
A kermesse (also sometimes written as kermese or kermis) is your standard race for a cyclist in Belgium. For senior riders, Belgian racing is pretty much summed up into two categories, Elites with contract (professional) and Elites without contract (amateur). There is also Espoir, Junior, Youth and masters races. For female riders there is Elite UCI, Elite, junior and youth.
In general a kermesse is usually based in a town centre which hosts the start and finish and covers multiple laps of a circuit usually between 8 – 15km. The amateur races are usually on flat courses and always have a police assisted rolling road closure. There can be as little as 30 riders, but typical races will attract 100+ riders, while some races will see the max limit of 175 riders reached during the start of the season.

We stay at Johan’s Lodge located in Sint Blasiuis-Boekel, Zwalm. Which is in the heart of East Flanders and on the route of many of the early season Belgian classics.
We have been staying at Johan’s Lodge for many years and the cycling friendly no nonsense atmosphere is just what you need for your cycling trip.
We can offer a meeting place at our base in Crawley, Sussex or at the Maidstone Esso services, junction 8 of the M20.
We will usually take the 6 seater van for the trips to keep the bikes nice and clean in bad weather and have an easier base for the riders at races, but occasionally we’ll take the car with rack or both.
Crossing the channel will normally be on the channel tunnel train as it’s the quickest way, occasionally though, we’ll use the ferry if circumstances dictate.
Riders will be expected to provide their own food and refreshments for the journey.
We will have our own travel insurance, but it strongly advised that riders also take out their own travel insurance for the trip.
